FIFO Mechanical Engineer

Our client is playing a key role in the delivery of major infrastructure for SKA-LOW, part of the Square Kilometre Array — the world’s largest radio telescope project. This landmark project brings together advanced engineering and world-class science in a remote setting and represents a rare opportunity to contribute to work with global impact in space and astrophysics.

They are currently seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer for a contract FIFO role on a 2:1 roster, running through to May 2026. In this position, you will take ownership of the mechanical, hydraulic and fire protection scope, including gas suppression systems, across the CPF and RPF sites. The role covers both construction and commissioning phases and requires close collaboration with multiple disciplines to ensure delivery meets safety, quality and technical requirements.

You will be responsible for managing mechanical, hydraulic and fire subcontractors, coordinating interfaces with other trades, and providing hands-on technical support to help deliver a high-performing, compliant facility.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Supervise and manage mechanical subcontractors on site
Oversee installation and commissioning of HVAC systems (including chilled water), fire protection systems, compressed air and gas suppression systems
Work closely with electrical and structural teams to ensure seamless integration
Coordinate test inspections and support the quality team with required documentation
Conduct quality inspections and verify compliance with applicable standards
Raise and resolve technical queries related to design and construction
Prepare and submit regular progress reports to the Project Manager
Promote and maintain a strong safety culture in a remote FIFO environment
Requirements:
Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical engineering within construction and/or commissioning environments
Previous experience on remote or FIFO projects is highly regarded
Sound knowledge of Australian standards and codes relating to mechanical and fire systems
Demonstrated experience managing subcontractors and working across multidisciplinary teams
Strong communication, coordination and problem-solving skills
Competency with mechanical design and commissioning tools
Experience with document control systems and QA/QC processes
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Navisworks
Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (essential)
Current White Card and valid driver’s licence
Ability to meet FIFO medical and site induction requirements
